Reddit roundup: a gadget backer hit with shipping fees far above the campaign page
Refund & Support · PledgeRadar Editorial ·
u/Phicksur backed a low-priced 9-in-1 drive hub and was later asked by the pledge manager for an extra $92 in shipping, far above what they say the campaign page indicated. Several other backers of the same project reported similar charges.
This is a real-world follow-up to our earlier roundup on post-campaign shipping fees. The replies below are backers' own accounts and opinions.
What Reddit users said
Says they reported it and were told by Kickstarter that no rules had been broken and that underestimated costs happen. They consider a roughly 7x increase far from 'slight'.
Original commentPoints other backers to the report button at the bottom of the campaign page's middle section.
Original commentNoticed that their shipping charge, from Europe, worked out to about 85% of the pledge, the same proportion as the original poster's, which seemed odd for different destinations.
Original commentOn a different project with a sharp shipping increase, they asked for a refund and received it promptly.
Original commentSees a very low funding goal on a hardware product as a red flag, and argues that a creator who can't estimate shipping a few months ahead shouldn't be launching.
Original commentWith the extra shipping added, they could have bought an established-brand drive for the same total, which defeats the point of backing.
Original commentThinks a card chargeback may be the only recourse, and noted the creator answered upgrade questions while leaving shipping questions unanswered.
